We asked ourselves ONE question.
If we could dedicate our time and attention to fix only ONE problem for the Ummah – what would we choose to focus on? What would have the biggest return on investment?
The answer we came to, was to help people find their purpose. This tackles the very root of all the issues. If we were living by our true purpose, the Ummah would be thriving. The first verses that were revealed in Makkah, were centred on purpose, accountability, heaven and hell, after all.
So, why are you here, anyway?
And what does purpose in Islam mean, beyond "I have created man and jinn to worship me..."?
What is the most important thing to KNOW?
To bring about a Second Golden Age, it can’t be done without truly transforming people to firstly aspire to be and then become like those changemakers, scientists, scholars and pioneers of the past. These were people who were inspired by the Quran, sought lifelong learning and lived according to their fitrah, which enabled them to go on to great achievements, change the world and leave a lasting legacy.
We believe that there are some key principles that they lived by that enabled their greatness. We want to reverse engineer that base foundation and combine it with the best of what the modern world teaches to revolutionise how Muslims think and, more importantly, how they act and who they become.
When studying those people of the past we realised the most fundamental difference was simply this:
They KNEW their purpose and fiercely pursued it.
We believe therefore, that the most important thing to KNOW, is your purpose in life.
The Solution:
Reviving the Pursuit of Purpose in the Ummah
“Without teaching people purpose and meaning, you create monsters.”
SHAYKH HAMZA YUSUF
The loss of purpose is one of THE most critical problems the Ummah is facing today.
In a recent survey, 89% of young Brits felt that their life lacked purpose. 57% of Americans regularly wonder how to find more meaning and purpose in their lives. 21% said they think about this issue DAILY. It’s become an epidemic and it’s no wonder we are lost, mediocre, stagnant and merely going with the flow.
Nothing else matters more than this – as this is linked to everything – your happiness, your relationships, your wealth, your health and most importantly, your akhirah.
It is the root cause of everything.
Once purpose is disconnected, the human becomes highly susceptible to distraction and disorder and loses his way. This has already happened on both a macro and micro scale and has caused crises across cultures and communities.
Having purpose gives you direction, energy, clarity, drive and focus. It gives you perspective, empathy and wisdom. It keeps you calm and resilient. It allows you to strive for greatness.
We believe our impact on the world stopped when we became complacent and stopped thinking about our purpose as an Ummah.
We are now easily led and are lagging behind.
If we hope to revive our lost legacy, we need to reassess our approach to rediscovering and implementing our true purpose to empower a new generation of thinkers, innovators and leaders who can bring about a Second Golden Age for the Ummah (insha’allah).
"If you want to change the world, start with yourself."
IBN TAYMIYYAH
KNOW exists to revive our yearning for the knowledge helps us to find and live by our purpose — so that we can become the best people we can be, fulfil our true potential and to serve Allah and humanity at large as we did in the Golden Age .
Reintroducing and reconnecting both young people and old to their God-given purpose has the ability to galvanise and revitalise not only a community that has been somewhat disillusioned but also one which has extremely high potential. If we can reactivate the desire to live by one’s purpose, the sky really is the limit in terms of the impact that can be made.
Why Know Your Purpose?
A Word from our founder
There have been two pains acting as the driving force in my life for as long as I can remember. One has been despite being a gifted child, I didn’t fulfil my potential during my academic studies, despite a degree and a masters.
The second has been a long search for purpose and meaning in the world, which has taken me from a corporate career in law, procurement, project management, data analysis to multiple entrepreneurial ventures in eCommerce, product development, digital marketing and consultancy. I learned a lot of things along the way.
One huge realisation was that understanding your purpose and polymathic thinking has been destroyed by Western education – as well as the main premise – to make God the centre of your being. Spirit has been taken out of everything in our secular world. We only focus on material and not metaphysical. Nothing makes sense because everything is disconnected. This is leading to many people having existential crises.
The Second Golden Age, therefore, was originally aimed at creating a campaign, a call to action for like-minded Muslims to rally around. It’s not about science or academia per se, it’s about the mindset itself. It’s about each and every one of us working towards this grand future, using our own unique skills, knowledge and talent Allah has blessed us with to fulfil our own potential above all.
The people of the golden age excelled BECAUSE they were deeply connected to the Quran, they were clear about their purpose – to worship God and serve Him – and would stop at nothing to ensure they learned as much as possible to serve better. This attitude led them to new discoveries and advances.
We don’t want this to be a project where we look back at history ruefully. We want to look forward and help to build a bright future. This is why KNOW exists. The Know Your Purpose Program is the incubator, the system, the process that will produce and polish the talent of the Ummah to create this bright future. We have designed it with this objective in mind – help the individual to find their purpose, in service to Allah, along with the right mindset and beliefs, and the rest will follow.
We hope this will lead to a future where we have developed a new Ibn Sina, a new Ibn Haytham, a new Al Khwarizmi.
Where we are nurturing the future Rumi, Allama Iqbal, Imam Ghazali and Malcolm X.
I hope this can be you.”
