 As part of a new three-year 'History of Capitalism' course, historian and former banker Benedikt Koehler, delivered an inaugural lecture based on his forthcoming book, Early Islam and the Origins of Capitalism. In his lecture, Koehler proposed a strikingly original thesis; that capitalism first emerged in Arabia, not in late medieval Italian city states as is commonly assumed.
