“I know where I’m going and I know the truth and I don’t have to be what you want me to be. I’m free to be what I want.” Muhammad Ali

This quote is more profound than it may first seem. Sometimes the best ideas are the ones communicated in the simplest way.

In a nutshell, with this quote, the late, great Muhammad Ali articulated the formula we all need to become our true selves, be confident in our own identity and have purpose and impact.

Let’s analyse it a little.

It can be summarised in three parts:

1. To know where you’re going.

This is all about having direction, an objective, focus, a purpose, and an understanding of the afterlife (i.e. where we are ALL going).

2. Knowing the truth.

In the Islam he championed so vociferously, it is all about knowing and adhering to truth, justice and enjoining the good and forbidding the evil.

3) I don’t have to be what you want me to be.

This is the rejection of the status quo, having an ability to critically think and to be purposeful in what you do, to use your own skills and gifts to serve in your own way.

It’s simple, but the best, most timeless ideas often are.

That is the formula for confidence, for freedom, for purpose. It is what served him well in his life (and in death, insha’allah). And it allowed to express his true self, instead of live by other people’s rules and expectations. May Allah reward him and grant him peace.

Do you have each of these covered?

I have been helping more and more people to find their purpose in life. If you need some help or support with one or many of these areas, please reach out and I’d be happy to have a chat.
